Well, we're going to claim the ever-so-obvious apple pie from American Pie. Perhaps we'll host a contest to see who gets to stick a banana in the middle and "wiggle it around a bit" (in the words of Dan) for extra authenticity. We may also, time permitting, attempt spanakopita in honour of this immortal vignette from My Big Fat Greek Wedding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfE8CA8EJWA . Warning: Dan may instruct you, perhaps more than once, on the correct pronunciation of spanakopita if you get it wrong. For your (dubious) interest, here are the options we discarded: - ratatouille ("too vegetabley" according to Dan -- I like it so I hope someone else makes it) - quail with rose petals from Like Water for Chocolate (pesticides!) - open faced herring sandwiches with black coffee from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (rejected because we couldn't remember if this was in the movie or just the book and also, EW!) -spaghetti and meatballs from Lady and the Tramp (logistics!) - coney stew with taters a la Samwise Gamgee (too similar to beef bourguignon and much as I'm willing to eat bunnies I'm a little squeamish about cooking them) - gnocchi, inspired by the sexy scene in the otherwise not very good Godfather 3 (We loved this plan and decided to do a rest run on Mei and Jeremy. It was lucky for you that we did -- they were a sad, sticky, gloppy mess. Luckily for Mei and Jeremy, we had a backup meal.) So far this Tacular wins for "most hours wasted figuring out what to make!" But it will all be worth it on Saturday. Looking forward to it.
We're on the ratatouille! (Now I just have to watch the movie) I have a recipe I loooooved growing up. Bet I jinxed it by admitting that. Oh and we might try to make fancy popcorn if I get organized.
Jeremy and I will be making another stew-y dish: gumbo, from the Princess and the Frog. And from probably dozens of other movies set in or around New Orleans. Whatever -- it's a great word: gumbo. And we'll get to say it all Saturday night. You're welcome.
The Fergormans are bringing a chocolate cake with ganache and almond flour, as seen in "Chocolat."
We will be bringing Korova cookies from A Clockwork Orange (Korova being the name of the Milk Bar in the movie) and if I can get organized enough, I may attempt to make some chocolate clapper boards as well...
The McMompsons are bringing a main dish with "buffalo" (otherwise known as "Tatanka" - Dances with Wolves:).
